Recipe: Follow the Cheddar Brick Road

We’re wishing a Happy Anniversary to the 1939 Wizard of Oz movie today! My good friend Tiffany, aka @followtheyellowbrickgirl on Instagram, is the biggest Oz fan that I know. She organized a full week for celebrating all things Oz - books, musicals, miniseries, you name it.

For my contribution, I thought it would be fun to make an edible version of the iconic yellow brick road. And cheese crackers seemed like ideal yellow bricks. Add a rainbow fruit medley to the platter and we’ve got a true celebration of Oz on the plate.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Cheddar Brick Road

Ingredients

  • 4 oz. Monterey Jack, grated

  • 4 oz. Sharp Cheddar, grated

  • 1/4 cup butter, at room temperature

  • 1 cup flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

  • flaky sea salt

  • 1/2 cup ice water

Directions

  1. Mix your dry ingredients - in a small bowl, combine the flour, salt, onion powder and garlic powder. Mix and set aside

  2. Mix your wet ingredients - in a large bowl, mix the butter, Cheddar, and Monterey Jack until well combined. Add your flour mixture and mix until you have a crumbly, course mixture. Add ice water a couple tablespoons at a time, mixing until your dough is of a consistency that it will hold together when you pinch it.

  3. Wrap your dough in plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes.

  4. Preheat oven to 350°F. On a well-floured work surface, roll out your dough to 1/4” thick. Cut out rectangles 1/2” x 1”. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 15-16 minutes, until lightly golden and crispy.

  5. To plate, try to line up the crackers in a brick-like pattern along a long platter. Serve with a rainbow fruit medley.
